Survival, Cause-Specific Mortality and Social Dynamics of Cow Elk in Southeastern Kentucky

Elk were successfully reintroduced to Kentucky between 1997-2001. Most early research focused on cow elk and calves, and how well elk remained at release sites. Our research led by doctoral student Brittany Slabach, in conjunction with KDFWR and UK Dept. of Biology (Dr. Phil Crowley), revisits important demographic metrics like survival to better understand how activities such as hunting impact cow survival and social dynamics.
