Shagbark Hickory
Shagbark hickory (Carya ovata) is probably the most distinctive of all the hickories because of its loose-plated bark. Common names include shellbark hickory, scalybark hickory, shagbark, and upland hickory. It is grouped with the “true hickories”. Shagbark hickory is a medium to large sized tree that commonly grows to 60 or 80 feet in height and up 24 inches in diameter. Shagbark hickory has considerable timber and wildlife value.
